OUR LIVES OUR RIGHTS

• This is Ethan McCord, the soldier shown rescuing children out of the van in the Collateral Murder video revealed by Bradley Manning via WikiLeaks. After the video was released, Ethan became an antiwar activist. As Bradley has inspired other soldiers to speak out against injustices, hopefully he will inspire you to take action in his defense. 9 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNERS ARE JOINING THE PROTEST AGAINST NBC’s NEW REALITY SHOW

  • “A group of 9 Nobel Peace Prize winners have published an open letter to NBC over its new reality show “Stars Earn Stripes.” A show that pairs up celebrities and American military members for military-related challenges. The Laureates wrote the letter to add their voices to the growing chorus of global citizens who are alarmed by the increased militarization of societies, and how the entertainment industry contributes in particular to desensitizing people of all ages to the realities of war.

  • During the Olympics, touted as a time for comity and peace among nations, millions first learned that NBC would be premiering a new “reality” TV show.”

  • “In response to the criticism, NBC released a statement to the Associated Press that said: “This show is not a glorification of war, but a glorification of service.” Chairman of NBC Entertainment Robert Greenblatt and producer Mark Burnett, said, “This program pays homage to no one anywhere and continues and expands on an inglorious tradition of glorifying war and armed violence.”

  • Desmond Tutu and the other laureates say; “It is our belief that this program pays homage to no one anywhere and continues and expands on an inglorious tradition of glorifying war and armed violence … Real war is down in the dirt deadly.  People military and civilians die in ways that are anything but entertaining … As people who have seen too many faces of armed conflict and violence and who have worked for decades to try to stop the seemingly unending march toward the increased militarization of societies and the desensitization of people to the realities and consequences of war, we add our voices and our support to those protesting “Stars Earn Stripes.”

—OPEN LETTER TO NBC FROM 9 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNERS

  • “One of NBC’s corporate parents, General Electric, takes war very seriously, but not as human tragedy — rather, as financial profit.  (GE is a big weapons manufacturer.) A retired general hosting a war-o-tainment show is another step in the normalization of permanent war.”

◊ ”Crony capitalism is about the aggressive and proactive use of political resources, lobbying, campaign contributions, influence-peddling of one type or another to gain something from the governmental process that wouldn’t otherwise be achievable in the market. … As a result, we have neither capitalism or democracy… It is a system run by powerful, political and corporate forces.”
